Network cabling, structured cabling, data cabling — that’s what we’re talking about. A structured cabling system uses a Main Distribution Area (MDA) where all connections are run. It’s the central point of distribution for the data center structured cabling system. It is the nerve center for consolidating the main cross-connects, switches, and routers. All active ports are replicated in a passive area with the MDA so that active equipment is not interrupted.


Point-to-point cabling systems create webs of bulky cables that we like to call cable monsters (or spaghetti cabling). They use direct connections that run from device to device via jumper cables. As the number of connections in a data center increases, maintaining this type of system becomes challenging, and even confusing, because of the mess that running additional cables can cause. Point-to-point cabling systems tend to have problems with limited airflow from data output issues and stress on the cables. Airflow issues cause problems with power consumption and the lifespan of the hardware in use.

Moves, adds and changes (MACs) happen daily in most data centers. These MACs typically require a change of position with the physical cabling. When two fiber optic connectors mate at a patch panel or into equipment, the pressure will cause poorly manufactured cables to fail after only a few uses. Whether small or large, your MACs should be done correctly the first time.


When the cable monster is at bay, the potential for human error is drastically reduced, which is a real time saver. Trying to remove a single cable from a large tangled mess can cause stress on the other cables. This stress can lead to network and channel errors in the hardware that are very difficult to trace.

If a point-to-point method is used, the front and potentially the sides of the switch are congested with cabling bulk. This affects the airflow that the switch needs to operate. This also translates to underfloor cooling issues from cabling congestion that hinders the airflow of the computer room air conditioning (CRAC) unit.


Optical power budget, cabling system loss and channel distance are directly related to each other. Exceeding optical loss budgets will lead to channel errors, which can lead to downtime. The best way to avoid this is to use a product set that can allow you to gain the benefits of a structured cabling system without exceeding optical loss budgets. This will allow for error-free operation and longer cable run distance.


Never underestimate the power of good looks. A structured cabling system will look clean and organized, which makes passing quality inspections a breeze. A structured cabling system allows technicians to use smaller diameter trunk cabling, reducing overall cable bulk and decreasing the chances for blocked airflow and crushed cables. Since the changes are done in the MDA versus at the hardware, the hardware can be cabled up and not touched in most instances. This allows the cabling in front of the switch to remain aesthetically pleasing.
